Geography
55.0000° N, 90.0000° W
The Canadian shield was formed billions of years ago and is Canada's largest region covering around 32% of Canada. The Canadian shield is a physio graphic division consisting of five smaller physio graphic provinces. The Canadian shield is one of the oldest in the world.

Climate
The canadian shield has very cold short winters and long hot summers. In the southern part winters and very cold and summer are very long and hot. The southern part gets lots of rain and snow every year. Temperatures in the winter average around -18 degrees Celsius and in the summer they average around 25 degrees Celsius. The shield is very dry and only receives around 200 mm of precipitation each year.

Flora and Fauna
The region has a very dry and thing type of soil in most areas of the shield because of its dry climate. The main soil type in the region is Bruinsols and most of the land is covered in boreal forest. There are two different types of shields in the area. One is Boreal siheld where the soil is very dry and thin and other is the Taiga shield where the soil is more dense and less dry then the Boreal shield. The Boreal shield is much warmer then the Taiga shield. The southern part has 15 hours of daylight in the sumer and in the winter there is about 8.5 hours of daylight. In the northern part of the Canadian Shield they get 5 hours of daylight in the winter and 24 hours in the summer months.

The climate in the southern part of the region is very dry and has about 15 hours of daylight in the summer and in the winter only about 8.5 hours of daylight. The northern part of the shield is much colder and less dry and only gets 5 hours of daylight in the winter but get 24 hours of daylight in the summer. It does not rain much in the southern part of the shield year round.
The forest have a wide variety of plants and trees. The area has birch trees, aspen trees, hemlock trees, pine trees and balsam fir trees. The region mostly has trees and less plants, although the northern part of the Canadian shield does not have any forests. The Canadian shield is a great area for animals to live in because of the great amount of food and water available to them. The Canadian Shield has lots of animals such as moose, black bears, grizzly bears, wolves, foxes, beavers, different types of rodents, wood buffalo, woodland caribou, weasels and hares. Many animals only stay for the summer because of how harsh the winter is, the low amount of sunlight and very cold temperatures draw animals way from the region. Other animals such as bears will hibernate during the winter then come back to normal once it starts to warm up.
Human geography
The Canadian shield is home to around 3 million people in the Boreal forest shield with a much lower number of people living in the Taiga shield area. The lower number in the Taiga shield area is due to the lower number of resources such as there are no forests and less animals in the area. Most of the population in the Taiga forest area is for mining, even thought there may be no trees for resources there still is a good amount of resources in the ground. Some major cities in the area include Sudbury, Chicoutimi, Quebec city, Thompson Manitoba Yellow knife, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.

Economy
The region previously was popular for fur trading, mining and forestry. Major trading posts were in the area where Europeans would pay money for the furs of certain animals that they could make clothing and other thing out of. Today the region is primarily mining and forestry. The forestry only exists in the Boreal shield area of the region because the Taiga area has no forests. The mining companies exist throughout the region but because of the population on the southern side of the shield there are still more people into the mining industry rather then the northern side. Exports from the area would be lumber, nickel, copper, gold and silver. The area is very rich in nickel, copper, gold and silver, the largest city known for getting these resources is Sudbury.

Environmental issues
An environmental issue that the Canadian shield is dealing with is Acid raid. Acid rain is acidic deposition that can damage or destroy the environment. Acid rain can destroy aqua life, crops, environment and building plus it can be bad for human health. Depending on what kinda of rock the areas of the region have the rain can have different effects on all places. Humans have influenced acid rain by coal fired electric power plants, industrial boilers, metal smelters, automobiles and trucks which all can create acid rain. An alternate solution to this problem is to use other forms of transportation such as walking or riding a bike. Implementing this solution has become and issue because cars and trucks have became a huge part of humans daily lifestyle. The best course of action to solve this problem is by creating awareness and get less people to travel by car and trucks and to walk and ride bikes places plus getting active would increase human health.

Comparison
The Canadian shield is very comparable to some places in Russia that are Boreal forest or Taiga type regions. The regions share similar type animals and plants such as the same types of trees the only difference is in the winter Russia can get much colder then the region of the Canadian shield. Animals have adapted to the cold weather in Russia by growing large fur coats to keep them warm throughout the winter.
